Doughnut- “Do-Nots”!


In this search for powerful art that would reflect the ambiguous world full of diverse cultures around us, I found this to be the most beautiful. A rather classy woman in an elegant dress that hugs her thin physique, a flashy purse hanging from her arm stretching a distance further than her long hair, her polished face hidden behind a hat decorated with colorful doughnuts—what a beautiful sight! But wait, since when do doughnuts make you thin? Since when are doughnuts considered a classy food? Is this beautiful or is this a reflection of what we’d like to see when we look in the mirror?

When we examine the woman individually, from experience and memory, we would place her at some type of formal event—a wedding, a polo match, an Easter brunch, perhaps?  Why would we think that? Fancy-clean clothes represent an occasion, as well as, thin and attractive girl typically represents money. This is a stereotype found in every culture. The difference would be the objects representing that stereotype.

The doughnuts, to most people, represent a choice. They contain poor nutrition and are cheap, however, they are very tasty and pleasing to our senses. Doughnuts have a disputed history but are believed to have been invented by the Dutch, created and formed from left over dough that was deep fried and frosted. They were cheap and popular among what was considered the ‘lower classes’. Today doughnuts are found throughout the world at any table. They have been crafted from the richest ingredients and served to the wealthiest and poorest of people. Another example of this that most of us can relate to is sushi. Sushi is considered a pricier meal that was once only served to peasants. Doughnuts, in our perception, would totally defy the similarities in this piece of art. Or do they?

Doughnuts are desired through our taste buds, they considered ‘beauty’ or ‘aesthetically intriguing’. The woman in this picture represents the same thing. We recognize the doughnuts and immediately can relate the image to a memory, which allows us to taste the beauty. The sight of the woman has the same of affect. This conscious recognition of beauty comes from within ourselves. What makes this picture ‘beautiful’ or ‘aesthetically pleasing’? The answer is that the picture is portraying a reflection of our innermost desires of longing. A persistence to be better, a decisive mind to make choices based on consequences, that every culture, nation, and individual is granted. We can’t all eat doughnuts regularly and be attractive or skinny (which is considered beautiful and desired to most people). This idea of recognizing beauty comes from our deepest desires, fears, and ambitions. These characteristics and wanted qualities are reflected in what we believe to be beauty.

The idea of always wanting instead of seeking gratitude in everything we are given creates animosity, jealousy and adversity in all aspects and relationships in our lives, on a cultural and personal level. Now the question is, what do YOU notice first in this picture?

  1. I have never thought of doughnuts in terms of upper or lower class food. I had always just thought of them as food. A lot of the points you bring up however are interesting. One of the things in the picture that I noticed was the fact that the woman does seem to be a part of the upper class just by the clothes that she is wearing, but her face is hidden by the doughnuts. Maybe this has something to do with the rich vs. poor argument and the fact that doughnuts are meant for the “peasants” so the rich shouldn’t be seen with them. Another aspect of this picture I noticed was the fact that the woman wearing the hat appears quite slender. I wonder how the analysis of this image would have changed had she been obese.
